What Fort can be a Fort if cannot be spotted beyond the surrounding walls?
Although a huge part of the Qila-e-Mubarak, known today as the Red Fort, was demolished in circumstances that we will discover, an area still survives and brings us closer to understand its nature and the way life which used to take place there.
The residence of the Mughal Emperors from the moment it was commissioned by Shah Jahan, the fifth in line, went through many vicissitudes.
For a while it was the glorious emblem of a powerful dynasty, until it became basically a citadel whose maintenance costs were not not even incurred by the Empire itself, since even before the time of the 19th Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II, it was already subjected to the British Raj.
