This tour is dedicated to the exploration of an area of Old Delhi to which tourists generally are unaware of, with the exception of those who are passionate about history, those who have been fascinated by the stories about the Sepoy Mutiny and want to go hunting for the places mentioned in many books that speak mainly of the months in which Shahjahanabad was under siege, in 1857. From here the English army broke through the walls of the Walled City, moving from the camp to the north, and then heading towards the Red Fort, capturing it together with the city and officially marking its supremacy that will last until August 15, 1947, when India will gain independence from the British Raj.
In this area there was the "magazine" the English arsenal that was blown up in those days, still you can see a portion of it. We will see what remains of Kashmiri Gate, now restored and enclosed behind a gate and, finally, we will also be able to touch a still existing portion of the walls that used to surround the city and realize how they were made.
Only from the outside, because today it is a government office, we will go as far as the bungalow that William Fraser, General Governor extensively mentioned by William Dalrymple in his famous book "City of Djinns", occupied until he was killed in 1835 closed to his other mansion, a little further north, outside the walls.
We will visit one of the oldest churches in Delhi, if not the first, Saint James' Church and talk about James Skinner, the “half-blooded” mercenary who had it built. An interesting story ...
Many stories to tell, many curiosities and other surprises await us, including the Nicholson Cemetery, the last home of many Englishmen who died during the revolt of 1857 and still used today!
